Referrals

You will require a referral from your GP or other specialist to make an appointment with Tansy Allergy + Immunology.

To receive your entitled rebate it is a Medicare requirement that you have a valid referral. Referrals from your GP are valid for 12 months, and from another specialist, for 3 months. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding your referral.

Reminders & Cancellations

An SMS reminder will be sent to you a few days before your appointment.

If you cannot attend your appointment you need to notify us at least 24 hours prior so we can offer your time to another patient and rearrange your appointment.

If you cancel less than 24 hours in advance, or do not attend your scheduled appointment, a cancellation fee may apply, which is not refunded by Medicare.

What to Bring

  • a valid referral letter
  • a list of any medications you are taking, including prescribed medications, over-the-counter medications, and any herbal preparations or supplements
  • your inhalers or nasal sprays
  • photographs of any rashes or swellings may be useful, especially if they come and go.

Please arrive 5 – 10 minutes prior to your appointment time.

Initial consultations usually take between 35 and 45 minutes allowing time for history-taking, examination and skin testing, if required.

Dr Tansy endeavours to see patients within 15 minutes of your appointment time, but occasionally may be delayed due to emergencies or other patients who have arrived late to their appointment.

Follow-up appointments usually last 15-20 minutes.

Skin prick testing

Skin prick testing is an accurate, safe, and painless diagnostic test for immediate (IgE-mediated) allergy and if required, will be performed by Dr Tansy during your initial appointment.  Drops of solution are placed on the forearm and small scratches made in the surface of the skin.  Redness and welts develop over 15 minutes and are measured.  Skin prick is useful in the diagnosis of hay fever, allergic asthma, and food allergy.  Environmental allergens include house dust mite, grass pollens, cat and dog dander, feathers, moulds, and tree pollens.   Common food allergens include codfish, milk, eggs, sesame, soy, wheat, peanuts and a variety of tree nuts.  If the food we suspect you to be allergic to is not available in commercial solution, you may be asked to bring in a sample to fresh food for prick-to-prick testing.

Antihistamines

Please stop taking antihistamines such as cetirizine (Zyrtec), fexofenadine (Telfast), loratidine (Clarantyne), Phernergan or Polaramine at least 72 hours prior to your visit as these may interfere with the interpretation of skin prick testing.

You do not need to stop nasal sprays, asthma medications or other prescribed medication.

Blood Tests

Some patients may also require allergy blood tests (“RAST” or specific IgE). In general, these are less useful in the diagnosis of allergy, however antihistamines do not need to be ceased prior.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding allergy testing and medications.
